How to Calculate Salary Tax in Pakistan
Guide to understanding progressive FBR tax brackets
Under the Income Tax Ordinance in Pakistan, salaried individuals are taxed progressively. This means that your entire income isn't taxed at a single rate; instead, different slices of your salary are taxed at different percentages.
Step-by-Step Taxation Example:
Suppose your monthly gross salary is Rs. 150,000. Here is how your annual income tax is computed:
- Determine Annual Income: Rs. 150,000 × 12 = Rs. 1,800,000.
- Identify the Active Tax Slab: Rs. 1,800,000 falls in Slab #3 (Rs. 1,200,000 to Rs. 2,200,000).
- Apply Slab Formula: The formula is Rs. 6,000 + 11% of the amount exceeding Rs. 1,200,000.
- Calculate Exceeding Amount: Rs. 1,800,000 - Rs. 1,200,000 = Rs. 600,000.
- Compute Percentage Tax: 11% of Rs. 600,000 = Rs. 66,000.
- Calculate Total Tax: Rs. 6,000 (fixed rate) + Rs. 66,000 (percentage rate) = Rs. 72,000/year.
- Calculate Monthly Tax: Rs. 72,000 ÷ 12 = Rs. 6,000/month.
Tax Exemption and Compliance Guidelines:
Salaried class individuals earning less than Rs. 600,000 per year (equivalent to Rs. 50,000 monthly) are fully exempt from income tax in Pakistan. To remain compliant, all taxable salaried individuals must file their income tax returns annually using FBR's official IRIS portal before the specified deadline.
